Balat to Galata – Jewish lives of the 1950's is a joint effort by Roz Kohen and Betti Özyel. Both authors grew up in İstanbul listening to the adults at their homes speak in Judeo-Spanish. They write about a bygone era of Jewish lives of the 1950s in neighborhoods where Jews lived: Balat and Galata. Both Judeo-Spanish and its English translation of the stories are included to record and preserve one of the Jewish languages that survived in the diaspora for five hundred years.
