From the 17th to the 19th century, Jannina, on the northwestern mainland of Greece, was the most important center of commerce and industry and the point of communication between East and West. The opulence and luxury, which influenced every form of life in Janina, was greatly reflected in the embroidery, which was used to decorate the houses. The bedspreads and bed-valances, the cushions, towels and sheets of fine linen, embroidered in polychrome silks, rarely with a few added silver threads, are decorated with motives inspired by Byzantine, Eastern and sometimes Western designs, which have been assimilated into a separate local style. Hunting scenes, the wedding procession and compositions with flowers, plants and animals are amongst the most characteristic subjects. (Girişten)
