#smrgSAHAF Jewellery / From the Past to Future Anatolian Handicrafts -
Turkey, is situated on a specific geographical point where two continents meet, merge, and inspire each other. A sequence of civilizations dating back thousands of years in Anatolia, are the precious assets of our stimulating cultural inheritance of which we are proud of.
We are glad to share this wealth, which has accumulated through the synthesis of richness created during the 9000 years of history in Anatolia and which forms an important part of the universal culture, with all humankind.
Anatolian Handicrafts, with a wide spectrum of high quality samples, constitute a valuable part of our national cultural inheritance, and provide an important economic potential for employment and publicity. These artifacts, reflecting specific messages through form, colour and design with high aesthetic values and possessing traditional and functional characteristics, can be produced by males and females of all ages, and provide the material examples of the experience, competence, patience and skill of our people.
Unfortunately, due to technological developments and changes in the socio-economic structure, the wealth acquired and incorporated from a vast geography could not be sufficiently protected and most of the handicrafts have tended to become extinct in time. These assets should be carefully preserved and protected against extinction and deterioration, and the ancient unique samples which has ceased to be functional should be used to accomplish contemporary creations.
DÖSIM, protecting and supporting the handicrafts, encouraging and supervising the production of new examples, enables the preservation of the traditional inheritance by applying and using it to suit the requirements of contemporary life styles and provides positive impacts on the national economy.
Through the activities of DÖSIM, large numbers of handicraft items ranging from replicas of works from various cultural periods evolved during the flow of history in Anatolia, to authentic or contemporary examples of modern craftsmen. These products are promoted by our Ministry both on national and international levels, and supplied for domestic and foreign consumption.
I hope that, in the future, a greater number of producers participate in those activities, the cooperation of individuals and institutions, producing new types of products with culturally sound aesthetic values, are established, the needs of the consumer groups interested in such goods are met with a wider variety of authentic products.
I would like to thank the craftsmen who have created these works, and I wish that the series of albums providing selected examples of cultural products of contemporary Turkey, will be of use for everyone interested in the various branches of handicrafts.
