This book focuses on Napoleon's expedition to Egypt which took place between 1798 and 1801. It was a critical event in the history of France as well as in the history of the whole of Europe and the Middle East. Henry Laurens, one of France's foremost historians on the Middle East, introduces the subject with an extensive overview of the historical context of this expedition. Then he gives a comprehensive account of this expedition and presents a picture of Egypt as seen by the French in the turn of the 19th century covering as diverse subjects as the archaeological remains and the social structure of the Egyptian people. The fascination of westerners by the east, easterners' attitude towards the French and the never ending tension between the east and the west are the common themes throughout the book.
