In preparing the bibliography, the catalogues of the British Museum, the British Library, the School of Oriental and African Studies Library, the Library of Congress, private collections and auctions; national bibliographies (i.e. the British National Bibliography and the Turkish National Bibliography) and Books in Print have been examined. When determining the items for the bibliography, some booklets and pamphlets have also been included, as :rey contain summary information which is often useful to the user It is hoped that this will expand the use of the bibliography, not only with academics, but also with general users.
While citing the items, the rules of cataloguing have not been strictly observed. The aim was to give only the author, title, publication place, publisher, date of publication, series information when available, and some information about the physical description of the book, which it is believed will be enough for a researcher to trace it. The books are classified under nine main subject headings. These main headings are subdivided when necessary. In the classification of books about travels and cities, the publication date has been taken as a criterion, because the publication date of a travel book is important, as it tends to give a general outlook of the period it is about. At the end of the the bibliography a title and an author index are included.
In addition to this study, if similar bibliographic works were to be compiled in other languages a major gap would be filled in the area of Turkish Studies. Until such a time, we hope this work will alleviate some of the burden from researchers. (From Introduction)
