Nowadays, smart grids have been attracted many attentions. Besides, the "Green New Deal" concept is of great importance for the authorities and the governments. With the motto of "for a greener world", a trend has emerged from the fossil fuels to the renewable energy sources. When renewable energy sources are mentioned, the first things that come to mind are solar, wind and hydro. The perspective of energy worldwide has started to completely change, as renewable energy sources become available to generate energy in reasonable amounts. With the recent developments in renewable energy technologies, the current state of the conventional electricity networks has begun to be questioned. The significant researches have been carrying out to enable the consumers to become power producers at the same time. These studies focus mostly on smart grids. With the increasing interest in utilising storage systems, it is highly likely to make predictions about major changes in the electricity grid architecture. As a result of all these developments, smart grids will be inevitable. It is foreseen that the power plants with great power amounts and few numbers in the traditional grid will be replaced by those with small power amounts and many numbers. Many authorities accept the inevitable radical change in the electricity grid infrastructure. One of the other trends of today's world is blockchain technology. It is anticipated that blockchain technology will lead radical changes in many sectors in the near future. One of those sectors where blockchain technology is predicted to revolutionise is the energy sector. There are various scenarios regarding how blockchain technology can be used in terms of both Bitcoin and Ethereum cryptocurrencies. There are many project-oriented studies in the world where this technology is used. In this study, many significant researches on smart grids and blockchain technology are reviewed. How blockchain technology can be integrated with the energy sector and smart grids is investigated. By examining the current applications on these researches and on those being planned to be implemented, a general perspective is proposed.
