#smrgSAHAF Committed Observer : Memoirs Of A Journalist - 1995
Andrew Graham-Yooll joined The Buenos Aires Herald when he was 22. Ten years later, in 1976, during a military dictatorship, he was forced to leave Argentina with his family to seek refuge in London. In England he worked on the Daily Telegraph and Ibe Guardian, and edited South Magazine and the journal Index on Censorsbip. In 1994 he returned to Argentina as Editor-in-Chief of The Buenos Aires Herald.
He could never, in those three decades, feel detached from the events and people he had to write about. His memoirs show how there can be no such thing as an independent journalist - the struggle for objectivity is a constant battle. Every case, be it war in the South Atlantic, lunching with spies in London, getting very drunk in Amsterdam (and elsewhere!) meeting with Jorge Luis Borges, Gabriel Garcia Mârguez, Graham Greene, Paul McCartney, Woody Allen or President Menem, demanding to know who will keep the records of the "Troubles' in Belfast, involves serious involvement and good writing.
Committed Observer is a beautifully written book full of fascinating insights and stories about the world of the international journalist. It is a book written by a journalist for anybody who knows that journalism is more than about merely reporting events - it isalsoa craft demanding passion and commitment.
