The Discovery Guide to Egypt is an excellent read before or after you visit Egypt. It contains many detailed maps of the sites to visit and very detailed information regarding each site. I borrowed this book from a girlfriend and was so delighted with it that I ordered my own copy from Amazon.com. To paraphrase the introduction, it states that Egyptians love to try to sell you items and that they love to bargain, almost to the point of being annoying. I wish I had read this book before I went to Egypt, because the hard sell and bargaining were a culture shock for me and the part of travelling in Egypt that I least enjoyed. There are a few black and white pictures in the book, so if you are looking for glorious pictures of Egypt, this is not the book for you. But if you want detailed maps and info regarding the various sites, this book is one of the most excellent I have read.
