This is a book Erol Haker wrote on the Jewish Community of Edirne and its Alliance Schools, an excellent piece of research, very thorough and exhaustive. It is a very valuable contribution, as the study of individual schools is a very important lacuna in scholarship. This is a perspicacious piece of work that will begin to fill this lacuna.

PROFESSOR ARON RODRIGUE, CHAIR, THE HISTORY DEPARTMENT, STANFORD UNIVERSITY, STANFORD.

"In the center of the book is the Jewish Community of Ottoman Edirne, one of the most important Jewish communities that thrived in the Ottoman state, that yet received only little attention from scholars until the publication of this important book. By studying the complex interplay and interaction between this Community and the local Alliance schools, Erol Haker brings to the fore the dilemmas and identity crises that Ottoman Jewish communities faced during the last decades of Ottoman rule."

DR EYAL GINIO, DEPARTMENT OF ISLAMIC AND MIDDLE EASTERN STUDIES, THE HEBREW UNIVERSITY OF JERUSALEM. (From back cover)
