Francisco Goya was a dual personalyt of the most mysterious kind. He was in many respects an orthodox eigthteenth-century artist; yet he was also a radical nineteenth-century satirist before his time. He was court painter to the king of a nation which still lived in awe of the Inquisition; yet his “Black Paintings” revealed a profound, almost misanthropic despair.
