Aiming to provide a new approach to Byzantium along the axis of health, medicine, and treatment that lies at the center of life, this book compiles 13 articles that build interdisciplinary bridges between subjects ranging from religious beliefs to supernatural forces, perceptions of eternal afterlife to health centers in Istanbul and Anatolia, medical literature to ways of access to exotic materials used in pharmaceutics, oral health to dietary habits, Ancient Greek mythology to traditions that extend to god Asklepios, and to the programme of hospital architecture in early Ottoman period that stimulates the senses. The book contents are based on the proceedings of the symposium that took place on 14 March 2015, Medicine Day, as part of the exhibition Life is Short, Art Long: the Art of Healing in Byzantium that was held in Pera Museum in 2015.
