Although some discussions have been recently carried out on the political role of the a'yans (notables) in the local politics of the Middle East and the Balkans since the 18th century, their very existence as a socio-economic power has not yet been fully examined with the exception of some general surveys.
In this preliminary report I hope to introduce some data on the socio-economic activities of the notables in Bosnia at the last stage of the Ottoman control of this region.
