Anyone seriously interested in the European Theater of the Second World War would be doing themselves an enormous favor by purchasing this eight-volume set. Despite the unweildly title, "Nazi Conspiracy and Aggression" is a treasure-trove of firsthand information about every aspect of Nazi Germany, from the formation of the Party in 1919 to its seizure of power in 1932; from the way it ruled Germany in the prewar years to its preparations, military and diplomatic, for war; from the methods and means it used to conquer and rule Europe to the philosophies and ideologies that lay behind those methods and means. Simply put, this series is the closest thing I know to possessing a personal archive of English-translated primary sources on Nazism. "Nazi Conspiracy and Aggression" is a vast collection of the documentary evidence used by the American and British prosecutors at the Nuremberg Trials in 1946, during which the surviving members of the seniormost Nazi leadership - most notably Goering, Keitel, Dönitz, Raeder, Speer, Ribbentropp, Hess, Kaltenbrunner, Rosenberg, Streicher, and Frank - defended themselves against charges of crimes against peace, crimes against humanity, waging aggressive war and conspiracy. Far more than a trial of a few middle-aged and elderly men, some of whom (like Hess) were of dubious sanity anyway, and others (like Dönitz and Streicher) of dubious guilt, Nuremberg was really an indictment of the Nazi state itself. Running to the thousands of pages, it details in great length the brutality and cruelty of the Nazis, not merely by providing eyewitness testimony but by quoting statements made, papers published, and documents maintained, by the Nazis themselves. Speeches, newspaper articles, excerpts from "Mein Kampf" and from Nazi journals and manuals, secret military and political doc uments, diplomatic cables, private journal entries, correspondence, statistical reports - it's all here.
