The İstanbul Archaeological Museum is one of Turkey's most venerable cultural institutions. More than a century old, its own history is also the history of museology in this country. At the same time, the museum represents one of the earliest products of the westernizing ideals of its founder, Osman Hamdi, which were tarsformed into reality during the late 19th century at a time when the Ottoman Empire was nearing its end.

(...) Many of the works now on display in the museum are appearing for the first time in a book adhering to standards of technical quality that are far superior to world norms for a publication of this sort. (...) As a museologist and an archaeologist, it is an honour to have been involved in the creation of such a splendid book for asuch a splendid museum, the first and only one of its kind in our country. (Önsözden)
